Update from the UNITE4TB Community Advisory Group (CAG)

News News

The UNITE4TB Community Advisory Group (CAG) was pleased to take part in this year’s Annual Meeting in Munich, April 22-24, strengthening community-centred approaches across the consortium.

The CAG was particularly encouraged to see progress in areas they have consistently advocated for, notably the discussions around the inclusion of adolescents in tuberculosis trials as part of the scientific agenda — an important step towards more inclusive and representative research. Expanding access to clinical trials for adolescents is increasingly recognised as critical to improving TB treatment outcomes, and the CAG welcomes this continued momentum. While it may not be possible to include adolescents in the UNITE4TB trials, the discussions are likely to have an impact on trials in the future.

The group was also pleased to observe a shift towards a non-stigmatizing and inclusive language across the consortium, with wider use of the term “participants” in place of less person-centred terminology. This reflects a growing recognition of the importance of respectful, inclusive communication - an area where the CAG has actively contributed guidance and perspective.

A notable feature this year was the inclusion of Principal Investigators from several trial sites. Their presentations to the session on community engagement did much to give a realistic picture of the importance of community-focused processes in day-to-day practice.

Overall, the meeting highlighted the tangible impact of community engagement within UNITE4TB.

The perspectives of the community with lived experiences are crucial to research and the CAG remains committed to working alongside all partners to ensure that community voices continue to shape the design and delivery of trials across the programme.

„The UNITE4TB Annual Meeting was successful, we were heard, our views and perspectives respected. CAG made a strong case for inclusion of children and adolescents in the trials. The Annual Meeting also provided an opportunity learning and sharing, we appreciate the opportunity to hear from the trial site PIs. We look forward to interacting with the local Community Advisory Boards across the trial sites in the next few months.“

Blessina Kumar, Community Advisory Group, UNITE4TB

„This year the atmosphere of the meeting was buoyant as different U4TB programmes, and especially PARADIGM, reported initial results. Progress on community engagement was also evident. In CAG we look forward to yet more link with the trial sites and positive impact on the later stages of U4TB programmes.“

Paul Sommerfeld, Community Advisory Group, UNITE4TB
